Pagham cull the badgers!
In the end, it was all too easy for Pagham as they dismantled a Seaford Town defence and, despite not playing at their absolute best, still managed to dump the Badgers out of the RUR Charity Cup comfortably.
After the poor performance at Worthing United, the game started where Saturday had left off when, in just the second minute, the Lions went behind. Seaford striker Jamie Morgan burst through the middle and gave goalkeeper Luke Terry, playing for the unavailable James Binfield, no chance.
And it could have been worse when, soon afterwards, Terry had to be on his toes to save from Joey Pout.
On 11 minutes Callum Overton almost equalised when he headed Joe Kilhams cross wide. But the home side did not have to wait long as Alex Ansa-McIntyre scored his first goal for the club three minutes later, thumping home another cross from Kilhams.
Scott Murfin put the Lions in front to stay in the 26th minute, shooting home from inside the six-yard box from a superb cross slid across the area by Overton. Pagham were stepping up a gear now and chances were starting to come their way. On 30 minutes Scott Murfin broke away, but Seaford goalie Jack Webb was smartly out of his area to hack clear.
Still the chances for the home side came and went, as first Lloyd Rowlatt hit the bar from a free-kick at least 30 yards out and Callum Overton had another shot scrambled away by the keeper.
Overton then thought he had added a third when he rifled home from 25 yards only to find the linesman’s flag up for offside. Seaford must have been very relieved to hear the half-time whistle go a minute or so later.
Their relief didn’t last too long though as seven minutes into the second half Callum Overton raced from the half-way line, evaded a last gasp tackle and slid the ball into the bottom right corner to give the Lions a 3-1 advantage.
It was all one-way traffic now as Scott Murfin surged down the right but his cross just evaded the onrushing Callum Overton after 61 minutes. It was then Murfin’s chance to almost score when he blazed over the bar after a cross from Overton.
Overton had two more chances to notch his second, one that flew across the goal and another when his shot went high over the bar after he and substitute David Crouch had broken through a very static defence on a two-on-one break.
With the game fading out, there was still time for two more Pagham goals. Firstly, in the 83rd minute Terrell Lewis, on for George Cody, flicked a header over keeper Webb from a cross from the left by Lloyd Rowlatt to make it 4-1, then Joe Kilhams finished things off a minute later when he smashed the ball home after winning a great tackle on the edge of the area.
