Lions roar into the next round with win over Wick.
By Tony Shea
Pagham snuffed out Wick's hopes of Senior Cup glory at the first time of asking in an action packed game at Nyetimber Lane.
Doubles from Joe Kilhams & Callum Overton saw off lower league opposition, as the Lions put last Saturday well behind them. The opener could have come from ex-Lion Josh Irish, who pinged a shot across James Binfield's goal within one minute, but first goal came in the 7th minute, Joe Kilhams making the most of an advantageous rebound from an Overton shot to smack the ball past Wick 'keeper Belcher. The visitors had some pressure themselves, but it was very much the Lions in charge. Callum Overton powered into the area, scoring a second on his mind, but an offside flag kept him from striking home. Joe Kilhams' ball through from a free-kick on 23 put Lloyd Rowlatt in on goal, only for the shot to hit the side netting. Rowlatt drew the attention of the Pagham physio on the half hour, able to continue after the application of the "magic sponge". Twice more the Lions went close, each time denied by Wick'Keeper Belcher - the second an acrobatic catch just under the bar. The visitors had a corner pinged in and then rebounding off the post. Overton could have scored a hat-trick in the dying moments, shooting wide twice and having a shot deflected toward Belcher & safety. Although only 1-0 up at halftime, more was promised from the home side.
A minute after the break they were denied a possible penalty, given in the end as a foul on the keeper. Joe Kilhams got his, and Pagham's second three minutes in, a superb strike from an Overton cross. It could have been 3-0 on 53 minutes, Chris Eyres almost turning in a Kilhams cross into his own net. Joe Kilhams hit the side netting before the Lions did got their third on 68 minutes, a bit of a howler from Belcher letting in Overton who scored with ease. This came amidst a shooting competition for the Lions, lining up to beat Belcher. A triple change for Pagham as George Cody, David Crouch & Terrell Lewis replaced Rowlatt, Ryan Cox & James Horncastle. The Lions did have to clear their own lines more than once by now, Wick coming alight to the threat of a heavy defeat, with James Binfield on his toes to keep the game with the Lions. An 81st minute booking for George Cody spoilt an otherwise assured performance from the Lions youngster. George Cody kept up the pressure with an 82nd minute shot across goal. Pagham Sub David Crouch did the same late on before Overton made sure with Pagham's fourth in injury time.
