Lions through in the FA Cup!
By Tony Shea
Dan Simmonds' double delivered a cup win against KSports' Paperboys as the Lions sneaked into the next round of the FA Cup.
For long periods in the first half, it was the visitors who were the better side. KSports carried on where they left off, after pulling back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 the previous Saturday. Time and again they attacked the Lions goal, with James Binfield at his best to deny James Shield amongst others. Controversy just after the quarter hour as K Sports' Jason Perry was booked following a foul on George Gaskin. The visitors' vocal managment bench made their feelings known, a theme they'd keep up as they railed against the officials for most of the game. Twice around the 24th Minute the visitors could have scored, first having a shot saved and hacked off the line, only for the rebound to also be shrugged away from danger. A corner saw the visitors strike over the bar, whilst at the other end a rare Pagham attack saw Howard Neighbour head straight at Paperboys' keeper Adam Highsted. As in their previous two games, the Lions had it all to do in the second half as the whistle blew on a goal-less first period.
The visitors pressed from the off at the restart, again James Binfield being at his best. James Alderman was the best on show for the visitors at that stage, keeping Pagham's defence busy. Against the run of play, it was the Lions who scored first. Dan Simmonds collecting a cross, and striking home to give Pagham a 55th minute lead. A scything tackle by KSports' Ashley Cooper on Calum overton bought Cooper a booking, and the Lions a free-kick. A low shot at Highsted was the only reward for the foul. With Howard Neighbour down for treatment, time for the Lions to regroup. On came Ryan Cox as Mitchell Hand left the field for Pagham. Dan Simmonds then tried his luck, a snap shot at Highsted coming to nothing. With Howard Neighbour unable to continue, Jamie Horncastle was an enforced change for Pagham on 65 minutes. Ryan Cox had been a real influence for the Lions since he came on, none more so than sending Dan Simmonds through on 73 minutes. The shot hit the bar, much to the frustration of the Pagham fans. A few minutes later saw Overton on a mazy run toward KSports' goal. Up popped Tom Carr, freewheeling into Overton's way, and snatching the ball away to safety. Pagham skipper for the night Ryan Davidson was at his very best with a timely clearence on 79 minutes. Dan Simmonds shot into the side netting as Pagham began desparately looking for a decisive secongd goal. By doing so they let the visitors in and Ksports thought they'd scored with three minutes left, only for the officials to rule the ball hadn't crossed the line. The ball definitely did cross the line into injury time as Dan Simmonds doubled his tally and Pagham's lead to put the result beyond doubt. The visitors didn't give up though, as Alderman again tested Binfield. Just time for Dan Simmonds to be booked for ambling off too slowly when being substituted and the final whistle went on another win for Pagham.
