Pagham 1-2 Arundel
Arundel take the spoils at Nyetimber Lane.
Nothing fishy about this defeat for the Lions as the Mullets hooked all three points at Nyetimber Lane. After an awful start to the league season Richard Towers' side recorded their second victory in a row, whilst the Lions' resurgence came to an end. Action started in the Arundel end, Pagham's David Crouch sending the ball Callum Overton's way, only for the chance to go wandering. Arundel's Lewis Jenkins went on a meandering run, before Ryan Davidson was in to clear the threat. Lee Mottershead was next to try his luck for the visitors, a snapshot winding well wide of the mark. The first goal wasn't long in coming though. A corner awarded to the Mullets took a wicked deflection in the wind, and it was Alex Briggs who was first there, steering the ball home after 8 minutes. It was almost 2-0 a minute later as another Briggs, this time Josh, almost headed into the Pagham net. Johan Van Driel's fine work in midfield put Terrell Lewis through for Pagham, only for a foul on Arundel 'Keeper Lewis Boughton to end things. Goal number two came on 24 minutes, a superb long range shot from Dion Jarvis rocketing into the net to double the Mullet's lead. A couple of minutes later a super reaction save from James Binfield saved further embarrasment for the Lions. A booking for Ryan Davidson on 33 minutes after a foul on Hayden Briggs seemed harsh and tarnished an otherwise polished display from the Lions' defender. Some time after Briggs muscled his way through and struck a shot which Binfield did well to hold. More bookings on 39 minutes, Pagham's Terrell Lewis & Arundel's Lewis Jenkins seeing yellow for nothing more than a minor tussle. Two chances for the Lions as the first half ebbed away, first Overton went into the area with no finish & then Terrell Lewis shot across goal.
That Lewis shot turned out to be his last action of the game as the second half started with Joe Kilhams replacing him on the wing. Johan Van Driel also sat out the rest of the game, George Bingham coming on as his substitute. An early substitution for Arundel two minutes in saw Hayden Briggs leave the field with Shane Brazil entering play. A sniff of success for Pagham on 50 minutes, as Callum Overton unselfishly fed the ball to Crouch who made no mistake from short range. Darryl Wollers shot a few minutes later wasnt so on target, but the intent was there. Tricky times for Ryan Davidson just before the hour as he went in hard on his opponent. Referee Mr Senior approached Ryan and many in the ground thought it was early bath time for Davidson. Mr Senior relented, and a stiff talking to was all that was needed to get the game going again. Pagham kept up the pressure, with George Bingham & Joe Kilhams both having chances. Niel Murfin's involvement ended on 72 minutes, George Cody making an appearance as Messrs Hellen & Simmonds rang the changes for the Lions. This triggered a period of superiority for Pagham, as they hit the post and began to look the more likely to score. David Crouch did have the ball in the net on 77 minutes, only to be denied by the offside flag. Overton headed across goal, the keeper conceded a corner, from which Crouch shot narrowly over. A booking for Arundel's Jordan Dudas with five minutes to go after a poor challenge on James Horncastle gave the Lions another chance to score. The free-kick went awry, as the minutes ticked down on a Lions defeat. They weren't quite beaten yet though, only a superb Boughton save keeping the Lions at bay from a corner. He wasn't so careful a few minutes later, lucky not to be booked for timewasting. With an extraordinary amount of time added on appearing, neither side could take advantage as the Lions fell to an unexpected defeat.
