Young Lions close in on the title
Pagham U21's went a step closer to winning the title last night as they beat Southwick 5-1 at Nyetimber Lane.
Goals from George Cody, Johan Van Driel, Matt Ryan and 2 from Callum Overton ensured the Lions took all 3 points from the fixture.
In a tight first half where Pagham had a lot of the ball, Southwick always looked a threat on the counter. Right on half time, Pagham pressed the Southwick back 4, causing a mistake and Callum Overton capitalised to put The Lions ahead.
Overton got his second moments later from the penalty spot, Captain David Crouch was brought down after an excellent run and Overton smashed home to penalty to double Pagham's advantage.
HT - PAGHAM 2-0 Southwick
The Lions immediately put Southwick on the back foot in the second half and were playing some excellent football at times.
In the 55th minute, top goalscorer George Cody beat the offside trap and finished expertly in to the top corner to make it 3-0.
Johan Van Driel then got in on the act with a sublime free kick from just outside the area, again finding the top left corner. 4-0.
Southwick then grabbed a goal back, a long ball into the Pagham box was only half cleared to Southwick's number 11 who smashed home a volley from 25 yards. 4-1.
Southwick were growing in confidence and were then awarded a penalty with 6 minutes still to play. The centre forward's strike was flying into the bottom corner, only for Pagham 'keeper Jordan Matthews to expertly save down to his left.
Pagham were moving the ball well still and had time to add to the scoreline just moments from the final whistle. A Joe Kilhams cross was met at the back post by youth team top scorer Matt Ryan to make it 5-1 and hand all 3 points to the Lions.
The win moves Tom Simmonds' and Will Searle's side to within 1 point of the title. The U21's travel to Steyning next Thursday night in a bid to secure the Championship there!
